Tonight’s meditation: THE PRIEST WILL APPLY THE OIL. Here we see the priest in his office of purifying the people with oil and also sanctifying them. The priest is Gods vessel to purify and sanctify the people by the sacraments and sacramental oil used for these procedures. In the Catholic and other churches oil is used during the sacrament of confirmation to represent and manifest our deepening relationship and faith in the Holy Spirit. We are endowed with the fruits of the Holy Spirit through this sacramental oil. The priest also uses holy oil for the anointing of the sick and the dying. Christ Himself was anointed for burial prophetically by Mary Magdalene, who used her entire years worth of perfume to wipe Our Lords feet with her tears. Just as Mary gave lavishly of what she had in order to honor the Lord with her precious oil and love for Him; so the Lord wants you to know His intimate and sacrificial love for you. His love is manifest in the sacramentals used by the priests in His church.
